Thailand Travel Adventures – Trips Available

led by Kasma Loha-unchit

"I'm continuing to revel in, sleep in and dream of our magnificent adventure. Being in a Buddhist country, meeting so many wonderful, gentle people and seeing so many new and exotic things has left its mark in my psyche in ways that I don't understand. You had a wonderful way of bringing us into the culture and people instead of being cut off as spectators. Thank you for that great opportunity." – Fred Onufryk

Welcome to Kasma Loha-unchit's cultural & culinary trips to Thailand. These off-the-beaten path adventures for people who love Thai food and who want to get to know true Thai culture are offered between November and February each year.

Trips Scheduled for Nov. 2018 through Feb. 2019

Central & Northern Thailand – Trip B – 18 days
January 2019

Perhaps the most popular of Kasma's trips, you'll start out with some sightseeing and feasting in Bangkok and then head upcountry. You'll spend a few days in the historical heartland of Thailand, in Sukhothai & Ayuthaya, exploring historical sites, temples and Thai crafts. Then you'll move on to the north, visiting the lovely foothills of the Himalayas with living hill-tribe villages (not just for tourists). Then in Mae Hong Son you'll stay at a lovely eco-resort and explore the Burmese-influenced temples. You'll finish the trip off with several days exploring the northern culture of Chiang Mai – we've added an extra day for this trip. Whenever possible, you'll eat your way through colorful, bustling open-air markets. And, of course, you'll feast on the very best food that Thailand has to offer. In the U.S. we see maybe 5% of the dishes available in Thailand: come try some of the other 95%!

  • Dates: January 4 to 21, 2019 (18 days + international travel days)
  • Price: $3,200, subject to change – international airfare not included.
Price reflects one extra day plus changing exchange rate.
  • This trip is waiting list only.

We are planning to offer this trip again during November/December 2019.

Southern Thailand – Trip So – 18 days
January/February 2019

Love the sea? Love to snorkel? This trip is for you. In 18 days we'll visit 3 marine National Parks with the best snorkeling in Thailand; Kasma's been snorkeling these reefs for many years and knows the best spots. We'll rent our own boats so we can snorkel at each spot as long as we'd like. Along the way to our snorkeling we'll visit open-air markets and spend a few days in Nakhon Si Thammarat exploring the unique southern culture. We'll feast on authentic southern cuisine (including plenty of fresh seafood) the entire trip – you'll eat what the southern Thais eat.

  • Dates: January 26 to February 12, 2019 (18 days + international travel days)
  • Price: $3,300, subject to change – international airfare not included.
Price reflects increasing popularity of southern resorts plus changing exchange rate.
  • This trip is waiting list only.

We are planning to offer a Southern Thailand trip again during January/February 2020. The itinerary may be slightly different.

Possible Trip Based on Interest

Northern Frontiers – Trip NF – 18 days – January 2018

This trip which explores the under-explored eastern reaches of the northern region – most notably Phrae and Nan provinces, which see very few international tourists. This part of Thailand is less developed than other parts; many of the cities feel smaller, contain interesting wooden buildings and are somehow more walkable. You'll need to like temples as you'll visit many on this trip, most of which will contain fabulous temple murals that vary in complexity, style and subject matter. You'll visit beautiful mountains and interesting rock formations. Of course, as with all of Kasma's trips, you'll walk through vibrant open-air markets and feast on delicious Thai food the entire time. You'll finish up with some fabulous sights in Chiang Rai. This is a unique opportunity to explore this marvelous region of Thailand.

Kasma will no longer restrict the trip to people who have traveled with her before (as we’ve done in the past); however, preference will be given to: 1) people who have traveled on Trip B to Northern Thailand with Kasma before; 2) people who have spent some time on their own before in other parts of Northern Thailand. Because this will most likely be the last time we’ll offer this trip, preference will be given to people who have not been on this trip before; repeaters will be put on a waiting list. Because of limited room availability, single supplements may not be available.

  • Previous Dates: January 5 to 22, 2018 (+ international travel days)
  • If you are interested contact Kasma. We will definitely offer this trip again if there is enough expressed interest.

Northeastern Thailand (Isan) – Trip NE – 19 days

Northeastern Thailand – Isan (or Isaan) is the largest geographical region in Thailand and a region that that still greatly values traditional Thai culture. This unique trip of 19 days (in Thailand) will extensively explore this less-touristed region. Isan is known for its textiles, both cotton and silk, and we'll visit numerous weaving villages in the area: this trip is only for people who love fabrics and are willing to spend money on them – we will go into peoples' homes and it is very awkward when no one wants to purchase something. We'll visit numerous temples, lively markets, ancient Khmer ruins, beautiful natural parks with fascinating rock formations. You'll feast on northeastern Thai cuisine throughout the entire trip, sampling well-known favorites such as Green Papaya Salad (Som Tam) and Barbecued Chicken (Gai Yang) as well as being introduced to many Thai dishes you did not even know existed.

  • Previous Dates: Nov. 25 – Dec. 13, 2014 (+ international travel days)
  • If you are interested contact Kasma. This trip will be offered again only if there is enough expressed interest.
