Georgia Markets with Thai Ingredients
Return to: U. S. Market Listing
The list was last updated in 2009 so it may be out-of-date.
Kasma has received some nice fan mail from Atlanta – there must be enthusiastic Thai food lovers there!
* & ** – given for stores with a good (*) or better (**) selection of Thai ingredients.
Atlanta
These markets were suggested by an Atlanta chef with a Thai wife. We've included his comments.
*Hong Kong Supermarket 4166 Buford Hwy Atlanta, GA 30345 (404) 325-3999 |
Hong Kong Supermarket is the mega- Asian supermarket in Atlanta, huge produce department and constantly changing fresh ingredients. (2001) |
Hoa Binh Seafood Market 4897 Buford Highway Chamblee, GA 30341 770-457-3383 |
Never actually bought any seafood here, but they are full of hard to find dry and frozen goods and SE Asian cooking equipment. (2001) |
Oriental Food Mart 5091 Buford Highway Atlanta, GA 30340 770-457-5666 |
This is a small Mom and Pop operation, Thai owned and operated. Hard to find items frequent the shelves her (bai-chapoo, bplah salit, etc.). They are really good at locating hard to find items as well. (2001) |
Riverdale
Thai Oriental Market 6467 Highway 85 Riverdale, GA 30274 (404) 997-3186 |
Recommended by a forgotten email correspondent. (2004) |
Savannah
We visited most of these markets on a trip to Savannah in February, 2009. I list the best market first.
* Hong Tan Oriental Grocer & Gift 816 Pennsylvania Ave Savannah, GA 31404 Map (912) 233-9184 |
Run by a Vietnamese woman, this is an outstanding market. Among the items they had were Golden Boy Fish Sauce (one of Kasma's favorites), all the relevant curries (Mae Ploy, except Massaman) and sauces (black soy, etc.), peanut oil, palm sugar and Chaokoh coconut milk (no Mae Play). If we lived in Savannah, this would be our main store for shopping for Thai ingredients. The frozen food section is a plus, including squid, frozen galanga, frozen fish, and Thai chillies. The only market where (in February) we found Thai basil.(February 2009) |
Original Nancy's Seafood Market Inc 2211 Skidaway Rd Savannah, GA 31404 (912) 236-6262 |
Although this is primarily a seafood market, the Vietnamese proprietress does stock two items that are worth stopping for – Mae Ploy Coconut milk and Dragonfly Brand Premium Oyster Sauce (Kasma's favorite is the Dragonfly Super Premium). Although this is not a strong source for Thai ingredients I list it second because it is right on the way to Hong Tan so easy to visit when you go to Hong Tan. (February 2009) |
Chinatown Market 1215 Price St Savannah, GA 31401 (912) 238-8260 |
The second best of the Savannah markets for Thai ingredients. They had most of the basics but did lack others. It's worth a look if you're close by to see if it has what you need. (February 2009) |
Han Me Oriental Food & Gifts 2 E Derenne Ave Savannah, GA 31405 (912) 355-6411 |
A Korean-run market, it's very strong in Korean ingredients (the fresh Kim Chee looked outstanding) and not so good for Thai ingredients. They had a few of the basics (including some Mae Ploy curry paste) but lacked many Thai essentials. (February 2009) |
Asia Market 117 E Montgomery Cross Rd Savannah, GA 31406 Map (912) 961-0170 |
Our Thai informant in Savannah tells us this is a small market with some of the basics. We didn't get a chance to visit (we found everything we needed at Hong Tan). (February 2009) |
