Going into most temples you pass a stall selling a little pre-made packages that include several sticks of incense, a candle, a lotus and one or several pieces of gold leaf. This Buddha head proudly wears the results of many worshippers rubbing the gold leaf on his face. In some temples there will be Buddha statues that are known to be efficacious for certain ailments – I recall a Buddha whose back was completely covered with gold leaf – he was said to heal back pain.
